In the last month or so, I became the proud owner of a sack filled with patterns for doll clothes. Most particular, they were patterns for the American Girl Doll and Cabbage Patch doll clothes. When I began sorting the patterns, my four year old granddaughter, Rose, sat wide eyed watching each pattern that slipped through my hand. She exclaimed how much she wanted each one, and each doll.

As I flipped through the patterns, I told her about the Cabbage Patch-like doll I had back in 1983. The entire body was made of cloth and she wore real baby clothes. I told her how my godmother had made that doll. It had blue eyes and freckles, and of course, long yellow yarn hair. Rose looked at me and said, “Are you going to make me one?”

After an online search, I indeed found the exact similar pattern for her doll. She picked out the hot pink yarn for the hair, and I have struggled to find just the right knit fabric for the body. I’m not sure how this will work out, but I’m hoping that I can at least make something that she will want to keep for a long time.

We have about 3 more loads to empty up the large storage building, plus taking things to the small storage building that we don’t use but occasionally. I didn’t realize how much stuff has still been sitting in storage since August until we opened the storage building and started pulling out items that have been in there for some time.

My goal is to have it ready by next week. All of it. My sewing area, my printing area, my heat press area, and my cutting area. All of it. I promise I will be adding new stuff on our YouTube channel starting this week. I’m ready to grow. That is to be the new normal.

Of course, our luck is that as soon as we move into the temporary space, it will be time to move again. My son and I have both agreed that at that time, we are going to hire movers. This is just ridiculous.

In the meantime, I am ready to rock and roll. I have so many ideas that I need to get out of my head, sewn up, and then uploaded to the site. The fabric has been bought. I’m just needing the space to assemble. I need a studio. That seems like a pipe dream. I will probably find one by the end of the year, but I’m terrified that by that time it will be too late. Maybe not. Maybe it will work out sooner and I can have my studio before summer. That’s not too much to ask, right?

As I sit and stare outside at the tree laden with lavender Wisteria vine blooms, I can feel the creative spark starting to take over. I have already managed to create some beautiful new beach themed pot holders for our K and R Expressions store, and I’ve cut out a new bucket hat or two for this store (look for the sneak peek tomorrow). Plus, I’ve been inspired by a few new fabric finds.

We are still currently in limbo about the new move. I hope to have a new studio space where I can truly work and be inspired. My small corner just isn’t doing it. Plus, I miss my sewing supplies and extra table space! My goal is to be in a new place before Spring Break, so I have that week to set up my workspace.

Speaking of moving by Spring…

I will start next week packing up everything. That is going to be fun. I’m still finding things, but I’ll just have to find them all over again.

It’s bad when my frustration at school is more over the fact that no one takes responsibility for the mess they have made rather than talkative behavior. It stresses me out more that they trash everything.

Even though I’m tired, I am trying to get back into planning mode. I want to start designing my spring and summer wear. Hopefully, I’ll be well rested enough this weekend to start a few things.

Sometimes I regret stepping away from my computer for long lengths of time. So much has happened since August, and I’ve been trying to learn to cope with it all, and in doing so, I had to step back from my business(es) and heal. Imagine my surprise when I logged into the backend of my websites and realized that things had changed and for the worse!

Unfortunately, K and R Styles on the Darkside is currently down for the count with multiple errors. I have no way quick way to go in and fix things as my hosting company has changed many things since I last logged in. I know that I should have been logging in more frequently, but some of our circumstances involved us not having internet nor having access to my personal computer. Scratch that. I had access to my dead laptop, but not my charger.

Anyhow, I will have to go into the backend of the website, and instead of just clicking a few links and updating things, I will now have to go through every single webpage and update the scripts which will take some time. I’m out of practice in that department as it has been many years since I wrote code. As soon as the links are back up and working, I will be sure to post an update here and on social media.

Also, I realize I have not added any content to YouTube and TikTok. It’s coming. As soon as I am back in a working space. The only equipment I have managed to bring is my sewing machine, and that is because I have to repair some of our clothes. Making new items is something that will not happen any time soon. As soon as we are able to move, I should have everything up and running along with Rose Needle Co.

I asked my grandchildren this week to pick out two favorite fabrics from my fabric stash so that I could make them both bucket hats. I want to add bucket hats to our shop, but I also wanted to test out the pattern and perfect my skill prior to making hats for the shop.

Both of them chose a Toy Story print for one side and a different Paw Patrol print for the reverse side. I thought this was perfect because if they wanted to look alike, they could, but Mom and Dad would still be able to tell whose hat belonged to whom.

As I was sewing Miss Rose’s hat, she was watching me intently. In fact, both she and her brother were watching and asking, “Is it done yet? Is it done? Are you going to be done?” I managed to shoo Kole away, but Rose was persistent about staying right there next to me while I was sewing. Out of both hats, her hat was the one that I was the least impressed with, but it had nothing to do with the pattern. It was her. As I tried to put the last of the top stitching on the brim of the hat, she started crying, “No! No!”

I was concerned and stopped the sewing machine and looked at her, and she suddenly was smiling and wiping away tears.

I shrugged and started to sew again.

More screaming and crying.

I stopped.

She stopped.

Finally I looked at her and said, “Are you okay?”

She smiled and said, “My hat is finished?”

I shook my head and replied, “Almost.” I started sewing again.

This time, she screamed and grabbed at my arm, “Stop! You hurting Buzz and Woody!”

Y’all, she thought I was hurting the actual characters when I was sewing. It was then that I realized I hadn’t sewn anything around her with characters on it and because this was the topstitching, I had the fabric face up and she could see the characters as the needle and thread were plunging through their bodies. I had to rush through and finish to give this child her hat. I’m just thankful that it wasn’t Doc McStuffins. She probably would have fainted.

I feel like I have been unpacking and organizing for ages! I’ve created a few vlogs for our YouTube channel about the ongoing process and progress of our move, but until this weekend, I hadn’t really made a good dent in the chaos. My current workspace is a disaster, and it is most unfortunate that this workspace also happens to sit near the door so it catches everything.

Yesterday, with my granddaughter’s help (I don’t know if you could call it help, but she liked digging through the boxes, plus it helps that she’s cute), I managed to empty several boxes, consolidate 3 boxes of fabrics, and sort through my HTV stash. Today it is all about removing the clutter from the work table and making an organized place to work. No vlog this weekend due to the grandbabies being here, but next week I will have another vlog.

I’m also trying to upload our new items. I have boxes of new designs that I haven’t photographed and uploaded. Plus, I’m designing the packaging for our headbands and scrunchies. Yes, we have those, too! I’m, unfortunately, a one woman show right now, so trying to get everything sorted out and uploaded is slow going. I promise it won’t always be this way. We will be able to get things up in a timely manner soon! It’s all a part of the process of reorganizing and restructuring the business. Right now, everything is just as cluttered as my workspace, but I am trying to sort through the chaos and clear out the clutter. I have a plan, and that is all that matters.
