I made the decision on Friday that I would start selling at the local flea market. For those in the Upstate of South Carolina and familiar, it is the Anderson Jockey Lot. I’m at booth 366.

I always try to have some type of eye catching visual. This time it was Rose’s Minnie Mouse dress (the one she picked the fabric out for out of my stash). I did the same thing with some of the princess print fabric I had. I’m not sure where that dress disappeared to, but she loves all of her dresses equally.

With that said, I have to admit that I didn’t have any adult shirts or older children’s clothes. Those are long lost, possibly from when our storage building was broken into. This week I am starting to make more clothes for the flea market, and I’ll also post them online.

In what feels like disappointment, I had a conversation with a potential customer that didn’t seem to go the way I expected. Here is the thing, guys. I can do things several ways when it comes to shirts: I can make my own (I usually do for sublimation) or I can purchase them. When it comes to embroidery, purchased shirts (especially the Gildan Heavy Duty) work better. They stand up better. My sublimation shirts are buttery soft and feel brand new even after several washes, but they are made for sublimation inks. For those, I use a double brushed poly.

Even with all of that, I have to charge a certain amount. All businesses have an overhead which is outside of the cost of materials or even labor costs. My overhead is made up of all of the costs or running my business (electricity, phones, rent, etc.) and divided by the number of items sold. Considering I haven’t sold that many items, that cost is a little higher being passed on. I usually divide it by 100 at the lowest. So the cost being passed on to the customer is usually around $2. You can break it down as follows:

  • Shirt $3
  • Overhead $2
  • Labor $10-20/hr
  • Markup +15-35% (35% to 65% is the expected markup for clothing, but I adjust to keep my cost down)

In a sense, this makes an embroidered shirt about $20. Depending on the complication of the design, I usually sell them from $15-25. Some designs require more hands on.

With that being said, I don’t understand why someone would be upset because I couldn’t bring the cost of something down? I have a business. I’m not charging you sales tax, though I should. I’m paying that off my end to keep prices from being complicated.

Just trust the process…. okay?

Now I have to go back to sewing. See you next weekend!

My sublimation printer completely died on me months ago. I tried everything I knew to fix it because everything pointed to a clogged print head. I had managed to fix it once before, but this time it wasn’t possible. I finally had to break down and order a new one.

Yesterday, the new printer arrived and I’m so excited about what happens next. I plan to offer more than just designs on white shirts. We are going to do designs on dark shirts. We are going to offer personalized license plates, keychains (no more not being able to find your unique name), and more. In fact, we’re even going to have jewelry! I cannot wait to begin. In fact, I will be starting to upload many things soon!

I also found some adorable fabric with the help of my grandchildren and they have insisted that this fabric will be a part of my next collection for kids. Stay tuned for what I do with said fabric!

I am also in the process of uploading our selection of gift wrap and inputting what can and cannot be gift wrapped. Some of the items are not offered through our store, but through a 3rd party that ships their items independently from ours. Those items cannot be gift wrapped, although I’m certain you can send a gift message with the item.

Also, because I’ve been asked multiple times over the last two years, I’m going to be including personalized memory bears and t-shirt quilts. I am still working out the pricing of the items, so this is a work in progress, but I expect to have them ready by next week or so.

If you want to make sure that you know when these newest items drop, sign up for our newsletter. When you do, you’ll also get a 20% off coupon to use for your first purchase.

My grandchildren love to help me in the kitchen, and I decided that I would design them some aprons that would fit them and allow them to help without getting too messy. The end results were fantastic and they absolutely loved the aprons.

I decided to go ahead and put these in the store. Currently, we have two different styles: one with ruffles and one without.

The apron with ruffles comes in two different colors. One is white with a trim and ruffle made from red with white polka dot fabric. The other is white with a trim and ruffle made from pink with white polka dots. Hopefully, my fabric picker (i.e. my granddaughter) will grow to love other colors and we can expand what we offer.

The apron that has no ruffles comes with choice of trim in red, green, purple, pink, orange, blue, or burgundy.

For the embroidered “Little Chef” phrase, that will match the trim choice. I do plan to get some other examples up soon. Our aprons are $19.99. We make them here. We don’t order them, so we know the type of quality that we put into our products.

Sizes range from S (3-5 years of age), M (6-9 years of age, and L (10-12 years of age).

Don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletter! You automatically get a coupon code for 20% off your first order. Plus, all sales are sent out to our subscribers FIRST! You get to shop early!

I know that I have been hinting at major changes coming for K and R Styles for some time now, but I am now exiting the planning stage, and I’m ready to begin the implementation stage.

One of the biggest changes for us has been to incorporate the business. Prior to this year, it was a sole proprietorship; however, I wanted to do more, and that meant that I needed to find a way to expand and maintain individual brands. I will actually be talking about this at a future date on a blog, but for now, just know that branding to me is a big deal!

Currently, you can find some of our newest and our most popular items for sale on Etsy in our Rose Needle Co shop. I really wanted to focus on our designs and embroidered/sewn items, and this was a great way to do so.

As for changes, you will soon see us phase out many of our items as the focus for those types of items shift to our Etsy shop. As for K and R Styles LLC, we will begin to sell blanks at wholesale prices. Unfortunately, at this time, we cannot offer Net30 or Net60, etc. accounts. This is not for embroidered items. This will only be blanks. Items that those who embroider, HTV, DTG, or Sublimate, can use to create their items. Over the last year, I have struggled with finding just the right products, and I realized that creating products for others who are struggling would be great, too.

Being able to expand into the blanks business gives K and R Styles a chance to grow and expand our market reach. Just know that this is something that will also be addressed on my YouTube channel as well. I’m truly hoping that I will be able to start creating videos that are geared more toward our product use rather than just vlogs. It’s difficult to vlog all the time because I do try to keep my grandchildren out of the videos as my vlogs are more business vlogs rather than family vlogs. Just know that this is the direction that I will soon be taking. Items will start to disappear soon from our catalog. Just don’t be alarmed. If you are looking for something that was in our shop here, but it isn’t on our Etsy shop, then just contact us. We will gladly create a custom order for you and sell it to you.

I asked my grandchildren this week to pick out two favorite fabrics from my fabric stash so that I could make them both bucket hats. I want to add bucket hats to our shop, but I also wanted to test out the pattern and perfect my skill prior to making hats for the shop.

Both of them chose a Toy Story print for one side and a different Paw Patrol print for the reverse side. I thought this was perfect because if they wanted to look alike, they could, but Mom and Dad would still be able to tell whose hat belonged to whom.

As I was sewing Miss Rose’s hat, she was watching me intently. In fact, both she and her brother were watching and asking, “Is it done yet? Is it done? Are you going to be done?” I managed to shoo Kole away, but Rose was persistent about staying right there next to me while I was sewing. Out of both hats, her hat was the one that I was the least impressed with, but it had nothing to do with the pattern. It was her. As I tried to put the last of the top stitching on the brim of the hat, she started crying, “No! No!”

I was concerned and stopped the sewing machine and looked at her, and she suddenly was smiling and wiping away tears.

I shrugged and started to sew again.

More screaming and crying.

I stopped.

She stopped.

Finally I looked at her and said, “Are you okay?”

She smiled and said, “My hat is finished?”

I shook my head and replied, “Almost.” I started sewing again.

This time, she screamed and grabbed at my arm, “Stop! You hurting Buzz and Woody!”

Y’all, she thought I was hurting the actual characters when I was sewing. It was then that I realized I hadn’t sewn anything around her with characters on it and because this was the topstitching, I had the fabric face up and she could see the characters as the needle and thread were plunging through their bodies. I had to rush through and finish to give this child her hat. I’m just thankful that it wasn’t Doc McStuffins. She probably would have fainted.
