I thought I’d take some time today and answer some of our most frequently asked questions.

Q. How long have you been in business?

A. K and R Styles has been in business since 2019. I had a bad episode that sent me to the hospital, and while in there, I came up with the idea and on October 25th, I put it into motion.

Q. What does the K and the R stand for?

A. Those are my grandchildren’s initials. The first ones to make me a grandmother. I now have 7 grandchildren in total.

Q. Why don’t you sell on Etsy anymore?

A. There are several reasons. The first is that you have to be careful in how you list things because of trademark and copyright infringements. The second is because I had too many strikes thinking that just because I handmade something, it was okay. It’s not. I actually had a viral video about it. But it is okay. I learned some things, and now I don’t have to pay Etsy’s exorbitant fees. At the end of the month, even if I sold 20 items, I owed Etsy. I couldn’t see passing those costs on to my customers just to make a profit. I would’ve had to increase my prices to 3x the amount just to see fifty cents of what I sold. It wasn’t worth it to sell you a $5.99 bib for $18 just so that I could make $1. Now I can make my $1, but your cost is a lot lower.

Q. Where do you get your patterns and designs?

A. I source those all over the internet. Plus, I also design my own. I’m good at being able to look at something and figure out how to create it based on garment construction. My grandmother taught me to sew without a pattern when I was 9. I don’t think that she read patterns. She just sewed.

I made the decision on Friday that I would start selling at the local flea market. For those in the Upstate of South Carolina and familiar, it is the Anderson Jockey Lot. I’m at booth 366.

I always try to have some type of eye catching visual. This time it was Rose’s Minnie Mouse dress (the one she picked the fabric out for out of my stash). I did the same thing with some of the princess print fabric I had. I’m not sure where that dress disappeared to, but she loves all of her dresses equally.

With that said, I have to admit that I didn’t have any adult shirts or older children’s clothes. Those are long lost, possibly from when our storage building was broken into. This week I am starting to make more clothes for the flea market, and I’ll also post them online.

In what feels like disappointment, I had a conversation with a potential customer that didn’t seem to go the way I expected. Here is the thing, guys. I can do things several ways when it comes to shirts: I can make my own (I usually do for sublimation) or I can purchase them. When it comes to embroidery, purchased shirts (especially the Gildan Heavy Duty) work better. They stand up better. My sublimation shirts are buttery soft and feel brand new even after several washes, but they are made for sublimation inks. For those, I use a double brushed poly.

Even with all of that, I have to charge a certain amount. All businesses have an overhead which is outside of the cost of materials or even labor costs. My overhead is made up of all of the costs or running my business (electricity, phones, rent, etc.) and divided by the number of items sold. Considering I haven’t sold that many items, that cost is a little higher being passed on. I usually divide it by 100 at the lowest. So the cost being passed on to the customer is usually around $2. You can break it down as follows:

  • Shirt $3
  • Overhead $2
  • Labor $10-20/hr
  • Markup +15-35% (35% to 65% is the expected markup for clothing, but I adjust to keep my cost down)

In a sense, this makes an embroidered shirt about $20. Depending on the complication of the design, I usually sell them from $15-25. Some designs require more hands on.

With that being said, I don’t understand why someone would be upset because I couldn’t bring the cost of something down? I have a business. I’m not charging you sales tax, though I should. I’m paying that off my end to keep prices from being complicated.

Just trust the process…. okay?

Now I have to go back to sewing. See you next weekend!

My sublimation printer completely died on me months ago. I tried everything I knew to fix it because everything pointed to a clogged print head. I had managed to fix it once before, but this time it wasn’t possible. I finally had to break down and order a new one.

Yesterday, the new printer arrived and I’m so excited about what happens next. I plan to offer more than just designs on white shirts. We are going to do designs on dark shirts. We are going to offer personalized license plates, keychains (no more not being able to find your unique name), and more. In fact, we’re even going to have jewelry! I cannot wait to begin. In fact, I will be starting to upload many things soon!

I also found some adorable fabric with the help of my grandchildren and they have insisted that this fabric will be a part of my next collection for kids. Stay tuned for what I do with said fabric!

I am also in the process of uploading our selection of gift wrap and inputting what can and cannot be gift wrapped. Some of the items are not offered through our store, but through a 3rd party that ships their items independently from ours. Those items cannot be gift wrapped, although I’m certain you can send a gift message with the item.

Also, because I’ve been asked multiple times over the last two years, I’m going to be including personalized memory bears and t-shirt quilts. I am still working out the pricing of the items, so this is a work in progress, but I expect to have them ready by next week or so.

If you want to make sure that you know when these newest items drop, sign up for our newsletter. When you do, you’ll also get a 20% off coupon to use for your first purchase.

How to care for your HTV shirt https://kandrstyles.com/how-to-care-for-your-htv-shirt/ Wed, 19 Jun 2024 10:11:00 +0000 https://kandrstyles.com/?p=6786 When you purchase something to enjoy for a long time, it is helpful to know how to care for it so that it lasts. When you purchase something to enjoy for a long time, it is helpful to know how to care for it so that it lasts. The same goes for your HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) shirts that you purchase from us or others.

While HTV shirts may not last a lifetime, it is possible to ensure that they last for quite some time. We do include care instructions with each HTV item that we sell, but we know that you don’t just purchase from us. We understand. Mostly.

Because HTV shirts are made by heating to adhere the vinyl to your shirt, hat, or bag, you need to take certain precautions when washing. If possible, you want to turn your item inside out. This will help make sure that nothing else in the wash is scrubbing directly up against the HTV. While rubbing against itself is fine, other items in the wash may not be as safe to your HTV item. For example, buttons and zippers. These things can scratch loose the HTV, even when the HTV is adhered well.

Also, avoid drying at high temps. We recommend laying flat to dry or even hanging to dry. Extra heat may cause the adhesive to release. It is also why we do not recommend using an iron on HTV clothing. We use heat to adhere the vinyl to your product. The addition of more heat can cause the adhesive to eventually fail causing the HTV to peel away from the product.

One of the things that I have wanted to do is sell clothing that I make from top to bottom. I love to sew, and I have made clothing for children, but I’m talking about beyond the t-shirts that I make for my shop (and yes, I make my own t-shirts for sublimation). I want to create ready-to-wear (RTW) adult clothing.

I have made my own shorts, dresses, shirts, and hats, but I want to offer those things to my customers as well. Not everyone can afford my custom sewing services (we go from pattern, to design, to fitting, to it is now yours). It is why I want to offer some RTW clothing pieces that can be purchased and worn. While custom made is best, it’s not always in someone’s budget. RTW is the next best thing.
